Electrical Power Engineer – Substation Design & Management

Overview:
The Electrical Power Engineer will be responsible for the design, installation, commissioning, and management of medium- and high-voltage electrical power systems in industrial and utility settings. This role will oversee substation engineering projects from concept through energization, ensuring compliance with all applicable codes, standards, and safety regulations. The engineer will coordinate with internal teams, contractors, and utility partners to deliver reliable, efficient, and cost-effective power infrastructure solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the engineering design and development of new and upgraded power substations , including one-line diagrams, protection and control schematics, and grounding systems.

  • Perform load flow, short-circuit, arc flash, and coordination studies to ensure system reliability and safety.

  • Manage procurement, installation, and commissioning of electrical power equipment such as transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, protective relays, bus ducts, and control panels.

  • Oversee construction and field installation activities , ensuring quality, schedule adherence, and compliance with design specifications and industry standards (IEEE, IEC, NEC, NFPA 70E).

  • Provide technical leadership for equipment testing, troubleshooting, and energization during substation start-up and maintenance phases.

  • Develop and maintain maintenance procedures and testing documentation for substations and power distribution networks.

  • Collaborate with civil, mechanical, and instrumentation teams to ensure proper system integration and interconnection of substation assets.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert for electrical system upgrades, reliability improvements, and facility power modernization projects.

  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, electrical codes, and environmental regulations , providing training and oversight as required.

  • Support capital project planning, budgeting, and contractor management related to substation and power system work.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology (Master’s preferred).

  • 7+ years of experience in electrical power systems, with a focus on substation design, installation, and maintenance .

  • Proficient with AutoCAD, ETAP, SKM PowerTools, and SAP or similar tools for design and documentation.

  • Strong knowledge of medium- and high-voltage systems (480V–13.8kV and above) and protection coordination principles.

  • Hands-on experience with switchgear, transformers, relays, and SCADA integration for power distribution systems.

  • Familiarity with NFPA 70E , NESC , IEEE , and ISO 9001:2015 standards.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and manage contractors and vendors through the project lifecycle.

  • Preferred certifications: Professional Engineer (PE) license, OSHA 30 , NFPA 70E , or equivalent power system safety certifications.

  • Data Center / Mission Critical experience is preferred.
  • Ability to travel
